Characteristics of Nd:YAG lasers

Nd:YAG lasers have been around for many years, but have a reputation for being painful and slow. They are several times more efficient than diode lasers because of their wavelength (1064 nm compared with 855 nm for diode lasers). However, due to preconceptions about them and the much higher cost of the devices, they are rarely used. The Gentle Max ProPlus has changed that. Whilst standard Nd:YAG lasers have a laser spot size of 3 to 5 mm and a maximum pulse duration of 10 ms, the Gentle Max ProPlus has a spot size of 12–26 mm and a pulse duration of 2 ms. This makes it significantly faster. The Gentle Max ProPlus technology itself is also innovative – its beam is divided into equal sub-pulses. This distributes the energy evenly, which makes feels many times more comfortable.

Nd:YAG lasers have the longest wavelength, which means they penetrate deepest into the skin. They do not act directly on the hair follicle, but cut off its blood supply. As a result, the hair is destroyed, quite literally, forever.

In the case of Nd:YAG laser, as with other laser hair removal devices, the number of sessions varies depending on each individual’s physiology and hair growth. The effect can be seen up to 10 days after the first treatment. This laser is equipped with a cooling system – a cryo-jet. It cools the area being treated to minimise discomfort during the procedure.

How do Nd:YAG lasers work?

Nd:YAG lasers are medical lasers, which are used for laser hair removal and the treatment of a range of other dermatological conditions. Their mode of operation is based on selective photothermolysis. The light from Nd:YAG lasers is absorbed by a specific type of haemoglobin (methaemoglobin) in the blood vessel supplying the hair follicle.

The laser energy, absorbed by haemoglobin, is absorbed by the blood in the capillaries and converted into heat. The temperature in the targeted capillaries reaches around 70°C. This causes coagulation and destruction of the blood vessel. That is precisely why Nd:YAG lasers are suitable for hair removal in people with dark skin – because the laser energy will not be absorbed by the high levels of melanin in the skin.

The Nd:YAG laser is a medical laser with a long pulse duration and It is safe to use on all skin types. In practice, however, it is mainly used on skin with phototypes I–VI and on people with darker skin (phototypes IV–VI).

When do we use an Nd:YAG laser?

Nd:YAG lasers are mainly used in two types of cases:

- for hair removal in people with skin types IV, V and VI;

- For hair removal in people with skin types I, II and III, if they have developed a tan during their Alexandrite laser hair removal treatments or retain a tan for a very long time – in such cases, we use an Nd:YAG laser so as not to miss the anagen phase of hair growth and to avoid prolonging the course of treatment.

For which skin phototypes is the Nd:YAG laser suitable?

The Nd:YAG laser can be used on all skin types (I–VI). However, it is rarely the treatment of choice for phototypes I, II and III. This is because The best and most effective laser for hair removal for this type of salon client is the alexandrite laser.

What are the disadvantages of the Nd:YAG laser?

There are two main drawbacks to Nd:YAG laser procedures.

1. They are painful for some of those undergoing the procedure, particularly if older-generation lasers or those from lower-tier manufacturers are used. The new generation of Gentle Max Pro Plus features enhanced technology to ensure that the sensation caused by the laser is as comfortable as possible and comparable to that of an alexandrite laser.

2. It is not effective on fine, thin hair. Only the alexandrite laser, which has a different wavelength and operates using a different technology, can treat this type of hair.
Are there any side effects associated with the Nd:YAG laser?
As with any permanent hair removal method, laser hair removal using an Nd:YAG laser may cause side effects. These include, for example, burns, scarring, redness, skin lightening and swelling. However, when administered correctly by an experienced therapist, side effects are kept to a minimum. With an Nd:YAG laser, burns rarely occur due to the way it works. Mild swelling may occur in areas with denser hair growth and thinner skin.
Differences between Alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers
The main difference between the two types of laser is their wavelength – the alexandrite laser penetrates to 755 nm, whilst the Nd:YAG laser penetrates to 1064 nm. The light from the alexandrite laser is absorbed by the melanin in the hair and is conducted from there to the root and follicle, where it is converted into heat. There, it destroys the follicle literally for good. With Nd:YAG lasers, the target is the haemoglobin in the blood vessels that supply the hair follicles. The laser cuts off the blood supply to the hairs, thereby destroying them – also permanently.

This is precisely what makes Nd:YAG laser hair removal suitable for dark skin and tanned skin. The longer wavelength is absorbed less by the melanin in the skin, which significantly reduces the risk of burns and changes in pigmentation, making it ideal for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types IV to VI). Therefore, there is no risk of burns even if you have a tan.
Differences in the mode of operation between a diode laser and an Nd:YAG laser
Once again, the difference lies in the wavelength. Diode lasers operate at a wavelength of 855 nm. This makes them effective for a wider range of skin types, including medium-to-dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick types III to V). However, they carry a higher risk of hyperpigmentation or burns for people with very dark skin compared with ND:YAG lasers. The reason is that some of their energy is absorbed by the melanin in the skin and hair. This makes diode laser operators more cautious with the settings, which leads to the need for many more treatment sessions and more variable results.
