An increasing number of people, including those who are increasingly younger, are developing a double chin. This cosmetic flaw is highly noticeable and has a negative impact on self-esteem. It can even lead to social difficulties. That is why there is such high demand for ways to get rid of a double chin and for opinions on the matter.
The most important thing is that it is possible to permanently remove a double chin, and in this article we’ll show you how. Read on and book an appointment for a detailed, free consultation at laser centre Body Aesthetics. We will also dispel a number of misconceptions surrounding the appearance of this imperfection.
WHAT IS A DOUBLE CHIN?
A double chin is caused by an accumulation of excess fat beneath the chin (submental fat) combined with sagging skin. In itself, it is not necessarily a symptom of any particular medical condition. However, it can be a serious cosmetic concern for many women and men, as it disrupts the proportions of the face. We all try to hide excess fat, but this is particularly difficult when it is on our face.
THE FACTORS BEHIND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DOUBLE CHIN
There are several factors that contribute to the development of a double chin:
- loss of skin elasticity with age
- poor posture, which leads to weakening of the neck and nape muscles
- change in body weight
- genetic predisposition
The truth is that being overweight no е the main factor, which is linked to the development and enlargement of a double chin. It turns out that it is precisely this fourth reason that is the most decisive and the most difficult to overcome. If you are genetically predisposed to having a double chin, it will appear regardless of whether you are slim or overweight.
Please also bear in mind the third reason, as „a change in body weight“ does not necessarily mean you are overweight. The fact that you have a double chin and subcutaneous fat does not necessarily mean that you are carrying excess weight. Nor does it imply that if you lose weight, this will definitely lead to a reduction in or the disappearance of your double chin. Rather, frequent fluctuations in weight, including sudden weight loss, may contribute to sagging skin in this area. It takes much longer for the skin to firm up, and when the body gets rid of „fat deposits“, this is one of the last areas it gets to.
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS FOR REDUCING OR REMOVING A DOUBLE CHIN
For some nomadic tribes in Mauritania, having a double chin is a symbol of strength and beauty. It was also regarded as a sign of power at Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV. In most cultures, however, it is associated with a sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle. Evolutionarily speaking, we are „programmed“ to find a long, well-defined jaw attractive. The reason for this is that it indicates good teeth, and therefore good health and a good diet. It’s unfair and most likely irrelevant, but it’s still true.
So what should we do? When it comes to getting rid of a double chin, you’ll find all sorts of opinions. Here, for example, are some of the solutions that a simple internet search turned up:
- Growing a beard – except that this only applies to a double chin in men. And even then, only if you have a thick beard and want to maintain it.
- Concealment by means of clothing – scarves or V-neck T-shirts, which create the optical illusion of a longer neck. However, this is only a partial solution for certain seasons. What’s more, it requires us to compromise on the joy of dressing according to our own taste.
- Improving posture – that is, to always keep our heads tilted slightly upwards and to the side, with our tongues pressed against the roof of our mouths. We gave it a go – we managed 3 minutes!
- Cosmetic surgery/surgical facelift – It is a quick and straightforward procedure, but unfortunately there is a rather difficult recovery period (it is, after all, an operation). Furthermore, the incision leaves scars, which is a significant drawback.
- Mesotherapy and liposuction for a double chin – They remove fat, but the problem is that they don’t tighten the skin.
- Massage and exercise – This is very valuable and important, and can be as simple as chewing gum, for example. However, it helps to slow down the growth rather than eliminate a double chin.
BODY AESTHETICS’ SOLUTION FOR TREATING A DOUBLE CHIN
All of these solutions for overcoming the „double chin“ problem“ have their benefits, as well as their drawbacks. There is no doubt that each of them can help to some extent. However, nothing can replace a healthy lifestyle and the joy of physical activity. Nor can it replace the poise and charisma that a person exudes when they are happy and confident.
Here at Body Aesthetics, we have four solutions to this problem. What’s more, we have sufficient experience and expertise to offer you the treatment or combination of treatments that will address your specific issue. Let’s take a look at the four technologies, methods and principles for removing a double chin that we offer. We won’t hide the fact from you that each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Here they are:
1. Cryolipolysis with CoolTech
- Technology: It uses controlled cooling to selectively destroy fat cells in the chin area.
- Principle: The device freezes fat cells to -8 degrees. This triggers programmed cell death. The excess fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body after the procedure via the lymphatic system within a few weeks.
- Method: An applicator is placed on the area under the chin, cools it to -8°C and maintains that temperature for 50 minutes.
❌ Drawbacks:
- The full effect becomes apparent after 6–12 weeks.
- The amount of adipose tissue must be very specific; it is measured during a compulsory free consultation at our clinic. It must not be too low. However, general obesity may also be a contraindication.
- Temporary side effects such as redness, tingling or slight swelling may occur.
- It does not help to tighten the skin – an additional treatment may be required for this.
✔️ Advantages:
- It permanently reduces fat deposits (up to a 30% reduction in fat after a single treatment). The fat cells destroyed in that area can never be regenerated by the body in that spot.
- Non-invasive; no needles or surgery required.
- The procedure is relatively short (around 30–60 minutes).
- No recovery period – you can get back to your normal routine straight away.
2. Morpheus8
- Technology: Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling therapy.
- Principle: It combines microneedling with radiofrequency to stimulate collagen production and skin tightening, whilst reducing subcutaneous fat by up to 7 mm.
- Method: Microneedles penetrate the skin and deliver radiofrequency energy to the deeper layers, leading to tissue remodelling and tightening, as well as a visible reduction in fat tissue.
❌ Drawbacks:
- It may cause redness, slight swelling and tenderness in the area for a few days.
- It requires several treatments (usually 2–4) to achieve the maximum effect.
- More expensive than some other methods.
- You may experience some discomfort or pain during the procedure, which is why an anaesthetic cream is used.
✔️ Advantages:
- The most precise of all the methods – we can control exactly which part of the area to cover and work at different depths in different sections of it.
- It combines deep microneedling and radiofrequency to remodelling the skin.
- It boosts the production of collagen and elastin, making the skin firmer and more youthful.
- Suitable for tightening loose skin in this area, even where there is no excess fat.
- It can be used on various skin types and for a range of skin concerns (not just a double chin).
3. VelaShape III
- Technology: A combination of infrared light, bipolar radio frequency and vacuum.
- Principle: It improves blood circulation, stimulates lymphatic drainage and reduces fat deposits, whilst firming the skin.
- Method: The device massages the double chin area using vacuum and heat, which helps to break down fat and improve skin elasticity.
❌ Drawbacks:
- It requires more than one treatment (usually 4–6) for optimal results.
- It is not particularly effective for large accumulations of fat – it is more suitable for people with mild to moderate problems.
- The effect does not last very long unless it is maintained through regular sessions.
✔️ Advantages:
- It combines several technologies (infrared light, radio frequency and vacuum), which produces better results than standalone RF treatments.
- It promotes fat breakdown whilst improving skin firmness.
- It feels like a gentle massage – a painless procedure.
- It improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, which helps to sculpt the face as a whole.
4. NuEra Tight
- Technology: Monopolar radiofrequency.
- Principle: It heats the tissues at various depths, stimulating collagen production and improving the skin’s elasticity.
- Method: Radiofrequency energy penetrates the skin, heating the fat cells and stimulating skin tightening, thereby reducing the appearance of a double chin.
❌ Drawbacks:
- The effect builds up over time – at least 3–6 sessions are required.
- Despite the very visible results, follow-up treatments are required every 2, 3 or 4 months.
✔️ Advantages:
- It operates at various depths, allowing treatment to be tailored to the patient’s needs.
- It stimulates collagen synthesis and improves the skin’s elasticity in the long term.
- Suitable for all skin types and can be used all year round; it can even be used as a preventative measure from an early age.
- The sensation during the treatment is warm and pleasant.
